(Re-posting article from my MySpace. Hope no one minds.)
Well, my first offical blog on MySpace. (The other one was from deviantART)
What could I talk about? I could spill my guts about all kinds of emo stuff. Isn't that what a MySpace blog is for anyways? lol.
I will warn you readers, I don't blog. I write deeper than blog emo crap.
Livejournal, Blurty, Facebook, dA, MySpace...ect. Yes I have accounts on these sites but really, what is the true benifit of spending time on these web sites?
I'm opening this up for discussion.
As soon as I start spending time on a personal website I tend to obsess with it for too long (lets say...staying up till 6 am custimizing layouts?) Yes, but maybe thats because design facinates me. Or maybe its not so uncommon for users to loose sleep over these things. Not even loose sleep. Maybe just spend too much of their day dedicated to the internet.
I understand if its a job or w/e, I'm not talking about that. I'm talking about free time. How long do you average a week online during free time? Taking this a step furthur...how about playing video games...or even watching TV? By yourself. All alone.
Talk about a social crisis. I'm thinking more about it and I need to seriously dicipline my time especially after getting my Mac. Its portable, sooo conveniant to comprimize face to face time with face to computer time.
A comment my friend made the other day concerned me, I won't not name him because I know he wants to be famous. lol. Yvan says, "oh, well , i just stay away as much as possible. one less site addiction. im already addicted to dA. spending at least 7 hrs per day on average with dA up, at least in the background. LOL. its all good."
Is it all good? (Sorry Yvan, no offense to you or anything.)
But I can say that in the past I have probably spent that much time on the computer a day. And for me, it was pretty depressing because I was isolated away and in my own little "computer world". Its also physically draining. I used to get headaches from staring at the screen for too long.
Also, spiritually draining. The computer can become so personalized that we are spending all that time focused on ourselves and our interests. Unless of course, your going to BibleGateway.com everytime you get online. Which, is probably not the case. (And I am not saying that the computer should only be used for spiritual endeavors!)
We go to sites that feed our selfish desires. Music obsessions, Video game obsessions, Movie obsessions, News and Gossip obsessions, Car obsessions...ect. Anything that is online that takes our time and twists it to focus more on our interests can be a hinderance (possible an idol) in our hearts. I'm not saying this is always the case, but it is a possibility.
From experience, I used to browse hundreds of peices of artwork online and it was feeding an obsession that I had. Everyday I kept increasing my time online and finally stopped and regulated my viewing only after I was staying up unreasonably late doing this.
It cut into my social-life and my God-time.
And its not worth it.
So, after all that I just want to say that I think the internet is awesome. It is a great resource for all kinds of information. I am even a student studying to become a Graphic Designer and know that computers are and will continue to be a huge part of my life.
But face to face time or God-time should never, ever take a back seat to computers. Ever.
